Useful to know
MDF is a special type of composite wood produced by residues from the wood industry and mixed with waterproof glue. MDF is dimensionally stable and easy to work with. MDF is often used for model making, prototypes and finished furniture or installations. This type of MDF is mixed with black colour to make it black all the way through.
MDF is NOT suitable for outdoor use or in moist environments. Waterproof MDF should be used in such cases instead. MDF is easy to sand and work with.
MDF is often used for templates, tests and prototypes, models making, props, furniture, jewellery and displays.
As MDF is a composite product, colour can vary from sheet to sheet.
Vector and raster engraving
Both vector and raster engraving are possible. Raster engraving is only possible in A formats.
Top – A slight darkening of the wood will appear along the score lines. This can be removed by applying a film before cutting. You can choose to add this option when you place your order.
Edges – The edges look brownish and can rub off. This can be removed by wiping with a cloth or lightly sanding. The thicker the MDF, the darker the edges.
Bottom – There will be some discoloration on the bottom after the cutting process. Usually it is a honeycomb pattern, depending on the material on which it has been cut. You can opt to add a protective film to your order, which will remove most of this. For A formats, you can also choose to add a double-sided adhesive tape, enabling you to put your design up on a wall without the use of any nails and screws.
MDF can be painted, oiled or lacquered to protect the surface and edges. The oil gives MDF a rich, more intense colour.
