Useful to know

MDF is a special type of composite wood produced by residues from the wood industry and mixed with glue.

MDF is dimensionally stable and easy to work with and is therefore often used for making models and prototypes.

Veneered MDF, black oak consists of a core of regular MDF, with a layer of black oak veneer glued on one side. The opposite side is either glued with a similar black oak veneer or a veneer of lower quality.

Veneered MDF is not suitable for outdoor use or in moist environments without being treated.  Just like regular MDF, veneered MDF is easy to sand and work with.

Vector and raster engraving

Veneered MDF, black oak can be both vector and raster engraved. The material gains a darker tone in the engraved areas. The thicker the engraving, the darker the colour. The colour of the engraving, just like the colour of the wood, can vary from sheet to sheet.

Thick vector and raster engraving may cause some discoloration around the engraved area. Particularly with raster engraving. However, this can easily be removed by light sanding.

Raster engraving is not possible on sizes larger than A1.

Direction of the wood grain

If you have any specific preferences for the grain direction on the wood and your design, please let us know by making an arrow in your file that indicates to us which way we should turn the sheet. You can also inform us in the comments box when placing your order about any such preferences you may have.

Only possible with A format.

Laser cutting

Top A slight darkening of the wood will appear along the score lines. This can be avoided by applying a protective film before cutting. The film can be added when you place your order.

Edges – The edges look dark and can rub off. Excess soot can be wiped away with a damp cloth, but the edges will still remain dark afterwards.

Bottom As standard delivery, a film is applied to the bottom prior to cutting. Therefore, the bottom has no noticeable burn marks. Some smoke may get underneath the film, which can easily be removed with fine sandpaper. You can also opt to have double-sided adhesive tape applied, if the design is to be mounted on a wall or suchlike.

Finishing treatments

MDF with oak veneer can be painted in the same way as regular MDF, but it is most often left untreated or lacquered to protect the surface.
